When I was in Kiel (Germany) with my friend Caroline in spring I bought a collection of German film hits from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. Apart from the stars that everybody already know about, such as Marlene Dietrich and Zarah Leander, I found myself especially fond of Marika Rökk - a Hungarian born actress, dancer and singer. In the clip you can see her perform in the 1939 film "Hallo Janine".
Even here in Europe our image of the popular culture of this period is dominated by Hollywood and american music, so I find it very exciting and interesting to explore other countries' popular culture. Up to now it has mostly been Sweden that I have explored, but now also Germany and there is so much more to be found.
