1500-talsstrumpor/ 16th century stockings

När Eleonora di Toledo, grevinna av Florens, dog 1562 begravdes hon fullt påklädd. Kläderna i graven har undersökts flera gånger och hennes sammetsliv och sidenklänning har bland annat analyserats av den framstående textilhistorikern Janet Arnold, som också tog mönster från dem, vilka man kan hitta i Patterns of Fashion: the cut and construction of clothes for men and women 1560-1620 (Macmillan 1985). Lite bilder på kläderna och en av Janet Arnolds teckningar hittar du här, här och här. Förutom dem hade Eleonora stickade strumpor i karmosinrött silke på sig och det är alltså en tolkning av dem som jag har stickat i höst.

Mönstret, som är gjort av Anne Des Moines utifrån bilderna i Richard Rutts bok A history of Hand Knitting (Interweave press 1987)  hittar man här som pdf.

Det här är en testversion där jag har använt Drops Baby Alpaca/Silke, som ju är både grövre och mer elastiskt än originalets silketråd, men jag ville testa mönstret innan jag gav mig på silkegarn.

Kragen viks alltså ner och döljer ett par strumpeband.

When Eleonora di Toledo, duchess of Florence, died in 1562 she was buried fully dressed. The clothes in the grave have been examined several times, among others by the prominent textile historian Janet Arnold, who also took pattern from them, which you find in "Patterns of Fashion: the cut and construction of clothes for men and women 1560-1620" (Macmillan 1985). Eleonora also wore stockings knitted from crimson silk, which ypu can see above; and it is those that I knit this autumn.
   The pattern I used is made by Anne DesMoines, after the photos in "A history of Hand Knitting" by Richard Rutt (Interweave press 1987). It can be found here as a pdf.

This is a test version. I've used Drops Baby Alpacay/Silk, which is both thicker and more elastic than the original silk yarn, but I wanted to try the pattern before buying the silk. The cuffs are folded down over a garter.
